Managers and employees have to deal with an uncertain world and yet are still required to deliver the day job, while all around them things are in a state of flux.

Our research during 2012-13 – ‘Leading Change in Uncertain Times’ – carried out by personal interviews with CEOs and senior leaders, showed that 60% of major business change programmes fail to achieve their objectives. So how do you set out on this journey with some hope of being in the 40% of successful companies?

There is no silver bullet or magic formula. But, just as you would not set out on a long journey without knowing where you started from and what resources you would need to complete the journey, why would you embark on a change programme without knowing the current state of the business and its capacity to cope?

Our research suggests that the successful companies have a deep understanding of their starting point and plan their approach according to this.
